and Michele slept with Richard Gere at her bedside.
Our early arrival allowed us time to explore the city and we walked down to the beach to look around.I didn't know what to expect really, so San Sebastián was a revelation. French architecture, historic city walls and a magnificent shell shaped beach of golden sand.
We explored the old town, a lively section filled with the obligatory tapas bars and night life. Another great town. Met up with Annie and David for an extended meal in prime location, front and centre overlooking the entire sweep of the bay.
The following morning we picked up the Hop on Hop off bus for a tour of the city and found out that eleven fires and many battles have left little record of the older past of the city, but some interesting stuff emerged. The Spanish Armada was built here because of the abundance of good timber in the surrounding hills and the mansion that is now City Hall was a ritzy casino until Franco took over. What a bummer. This town is crying out for a sixteenth century mansion on the water full of Pokies. Imagine how much they would make out of the Aussies coming back from Pamplona on a bull running high. The day was getting hotter so after a paddle in the Atlantic Michele and I decided on walking back to the hotel to get our togs. We were going to brave the hordes ( I mean hordes) of beach goers and have a Hawks Nest afternoon. Beach chairs were at a premium so it was hotel towels and a spot near the incoming tide. The water was suspiciously warm near the shore, but magnificently cool out further. It was almost surreal being in the ocean surrounded by this old, magnificent city, but clearly we weren't the only ones with the idea. I have never been on such a crowded beach. Moving back from the approaching high tide mark was tricky, with people everywhere, but we managed. It was great so have a summer afternoon Oz style though.
We tapas hopped our last night in Spain and our last night with Anne and David. It has been a glorious week. Loved Spain. Good people, excellent food, cold quality beer, stunning scenery and thanks to Anne and Michele top class accommodation.
